September 26 1990 – Trevor Steven scores a brilliant solo goal to decide a tight League Cup semi-final against holders Aberdeen, Graeme Souness’s men winning 1-0 to set up an Old Firm final. The match was overshadowed pre-match by the news that Souness had dropped club captain Terry Butcher for the game, with Richard Gough leading the team out on to the Hampden pitch. Butcher never played for the Rangers first team again.

September 27 2023 – Under-pressure Rangers manager Michael Beale enjoys a comfortable 4-0 home win over Livingston in the quarter-final of the League Cup at Ibrox. A first half strike by Abdallah Sima settled home nerves, with second half goals by Ridvan Yilmaz, an own goal, and a late Ryan Jack effort completing the scoreline. It would temporary respite for Beale, as he oversaw a dire defeat a few days later at home to Aberdeen and was then dismissed.
September 28 1999 – Rangers travel to Holland for a crunch Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven and return home with the three points after a superb 1-0 win. The only goal of the match was scored by substitute Jorg Albertz, who smashed home a trademark volley from the edge of the box with just six minutes left to play.
September 29 1939 – Jim Baxter is born in Hill O’Beath in Fife. Signed from Raith Rovers in 1960, Baxter is widely regarded as one of the finest Scottish footballers of all-time, and he was the maestro in the midfield who conducted the orchestra in Scot Symon’s legendary Rangers side of the early 1960s. He won 3 league titles, 3 Scottish Cups and 4 League Cups in a glittering first spell at the club, before being sold to Sunderland in 1965 after a wages dispute. A brief return in season 1969/70 failed to recapture his past majesty, but he remains one of the most idolised players in club history. He played 254 times for Rangers, and was also the inspiration of the Scotland team, winning 34 caps that included two iconic wins at Wembley.
September 30 1987 – In a spine-tingling Ibrox atmosphere, Rangers defeat Soviet stars Dynamo Kiev 2-0 in the European Cup first round second leg to progress 2-1 on aggregate. Boss Graeme Souness made headline by ordering the pitch to be narrowed in a tactic to deny the Kiev pacy wide men the room they needed to exploit, and goals by Mark Falco and Ally McCoist sent the capacity crowd into orbit.
October 01 2020 – Steven Gerrard’s Rangers impressively qualify for the group stage of the Europa League for the third successive season by defeating Turkish giants Galatasaray 2-1 at Ibrox. In a season blighted by a global pandemic meaning no supporters in stadia, the Rangers fans had to watch from home as excellent second half goals by Scott Arfield and James Tavernier were the difference. A late Turkish consolation meant a nervous end to the game, but Rangers thoroughly deserved the win.
October 02 2007 – A glorious night for Rangers in the Champions League, as they defeat French champions Lyon 3-0 in France to record one of the most impressive away victories for the club in continental competition. Walter Smith’s tactic of organised defence and quick counter attack worked to perfection, with a first half Lee McCulloch header then added to with early second half strikes from Daniel Cousin and Damarcus Beasley.
